Pamlico Packing Co., Inc. is one of the oldest seafood companies in North Carolina. It was established in 1941 in Vandemere, N.C. by Mr. Earl Holton. The business operated several years as an oyster processor, but eventually diversified into fresh fish and a new species called “shrimp”. At first no one really knew what to do with these “shrimp”, but after World War II locals eventually discovered how tasty this new species could be. Mr. Holton continued to operate Pamlico Packing Co., Inc. into the early 1970’s until he eventually sold the business to a “Raleigh transplant” that he had taken under his wing.
Ed Cross, a Raleigh N.C. native, purchased the business from Mr. Holton in 1976 and continued to diversify the company into crab processing and restaurant distribution. When Mr. Cross unofficially retired in 1996, his two sons began managing the business and continue to do so today.
Due to steady growth and the need for additional freezer capacity a second location in Grantsboro, N.C. was purchased in 1995. The facility was refurbished and additional equipment was installed that would enable the company to freeze shrimp in “IQF” form, which is preferred by retail markets and supermarkets. The company has continued to expand into other areas of the seafood industry, including importing, exporting, and value added products. Pamlico Packing Co., Inc. is now considered THE premier supplier of fresh and frozen headless shrimp in North Carolina.
